Jane Monheit’s sultry voice is unlike any other modern female jazz vocalist; her voice exudes a leisurely quality that is both soothing and stirringly beautiful. Her musical phrases bend and shape the lyrics of her new album the lovers, the dreamers, and me, a rich assortment of classic and contemporary renditions of well-liked jazz and pop songs, released by Concord Records on January 20th. Of note is the interestingly complex “Slow Like Honey,” adapted from Fiona Apple’s original composition, and Cole Porter’s “Get Out of Town,” a tribute to smooth syncopation and nostalgic tranquility.
